Biography

Giuseppe Monteleone

Gerocarne – Italy

He lives and works in Gerocarne, a small town in the Calabrian hinterland where he was born and raised. He has been taking photographs since he was a teenager, in an era when the Internet did not exist and the only way to learn was to look, try, and make mistakes. After a long break in which he shot only by instinct, he rediscovered photography as the answer to a need. A need that he cannot fully explain, but which continues to guide him. Through photography he searches for stories. His own and those of others. The stories that call to him — that hit him in the gut. Because his approach is visceral: if an idea does not deeply involve him, he prefers to let it go. His subjects are people. But not all of them. Only those who, at a certain moment, give him something back. A fragment. A truth. A possibility of storytelling. His gaze is fueled by his experience, by his fractures, by the long and honest lens with which he looks at himself and the world. What he seeks, every time, is a contact. And a form of restitution.

The Project

“Fragments of the Self”

This series was not born from a concept, but from a necessity. I was not trying to define myself. I was trying to recognize what was left of me. And I found the only witness I could still face: my reflection. Each image is a fragment of that silent dialogue. Sometimes the mirror judges. Sometimes it welcomes. Sometimes it turns its back on me. Each return to the mirror shows a different version of me — not because I change my mask, but because identity itself is a series of returns, hesitations, partial recognitions. What I am looking for is not a performance — but a contact. Not a mask — but a face that resists, even if fractured. These self-portraits are not answers. They are thresholds. Each opens to a version of me that I had not yet seen. This selection is part of a larger work, still in progress, a personal research on identity through the mirror and its silences. What you see here is a fragment — the moment before starting again. The entire series will be visible online, for those who want to follow the complete path.

I am very happy to be able to participate in the photography exhibition in Tropea – Italy, thank you very much to Marcello who has arranged everything. The exhibition went smoothly, and it was nice to see the videos during the exhibition. Marcello sent me photos of my exhibit to my country Indonesia and I was very happy to see it, as well as the catalogue book and barcodes as well. I hope to be able to participate in another photo exhibition. Thank you for your hard work so this photography exhibition can be done well.

The exhibit at the Museo Diocesano in Tropea was a beautiful blend of history and contemporary vision. Each photographer brought their own style, ranging from street photography to nature and wildlife, creating a diverse yet harmonious collection.
The centuries-old setting added depth and reverence, making the images feel timeless and giving the exhibit a unique and lasting impact.
