Biography
Valérie Kagy
Nouméa – New Caledonia
Valérie Kagy is a French photographer whose vision was formed during her childhood, inspired by the complicity of a father who instilled in her a love of observation and gave her her first camera. Contemplative by nature, she learned to capture the silences of the world, to listen to the light, to capture suspended moments—an approach that today permeates her entire artistic process. With a PhD in plant physiology, she embarked on a scientific career while developing a sensitive and intuitive photographic practice. For her, photography has become a space for intimate expression, a breath of fresh air parallel to the rational world, a way to slow down and feel. She practices street photography as an art of discretion and emotion. Her images, taken during her travels, demonstrate a keen eye for humanity, the play of light and shadow, the lines and colors of everyday life. She is a member of the collectives “Street is a Woman,” “Street Photography France,” and “Women Street Photographers.” Eager to enrich her practice, she has participated in several immersive workshops, notably in Cambodia with photographer Nicolas Pascarel and in the Baie de Somme with Tibo Dhermy, a renowned photographer, former Leica ambassador, and contributor to National Geographic magazine. Her work has been published in Pixel Photo Magazine, Eye Inspired Magazine, Street Photography France Revue, and Docu Magazine, demonstrating her growing recognition in the world of contemporary photography. Through her images, Valérie seeks to reveal the world’s discreet beauty, capturing emotion wherever it emerges, fleeting and sincere.

The Project
"Both Sides"
On one side, Marina Beach, one of Chennai’s main attractions. At the end of the day, its soft light, serenity, and magnificent sunsets have made it an inspiring place for Chennai residents and visitors. People come here with family or friends to dip their toes in the water and enjoy the fullness of this place that invites contemplation. Night falls quickly, and the colorful lights of the food stalls and makeshift rides illuminate the faces of children and their parents. On the other side, the Nochikuppam art district. Night has fallen, and the bustle of the neighborhood takes over. The bright lights of the buildings illuminate the colors of the murals and the life beneath them. These works resonate with the spirit of the fishing communities who live there: explorations centered on stories that resonate with the sea. But behind this urban and artistic dynamic, the story of this real estate project has an entirely different reality. The 2004 tsunami and the 2015 floods devastated a large number of traditional fishermen’s homes in Nochikuppam. Indian authorities then developed real estate projects aimed at rehousing these communities, but above all, reclaiming the sites to beautify the city and facilitate traffic. Entire coastal villages were destroyed, with hundreds of people displaced or crammed into these buildings across the road. The beauty of the murals masks precarious living conditions and unprecedented overcrowding. To date, only 600 of the 1,000 families have been relocated, and 400 are waiting, some for more than seven years, in the shantytown in makeshift tents. The fish stalls run by women along Marina Loop Road, where we were, mark the entrance to the shantytown.

I am very happy to be able to participate in the photography exhibition in Tropea – Italy, thank you very much to Marcello who has arranged everything. The exhibition went smoothly, and it was nice to see the videos during the exhibition. Marcello sent me photos of my exhibit to my country Indonesia and I was very happy to see it, as well as the catalogue book and barcodes as well. I hope to be able to participate in another photo exhibition. Thank you for your hard work so this photography exhibition can be done well.

The exhibit at the Museo Diocesano in Tropea was a beautiful blend of history and contemporary vision. Each photographer brought their own style, ranging from street photography to nature and wildlife, creating a diverse yet harmonious collection.
The centuries-old setting added depth and reverence, making the images feel timeless and giving the exhibit a unique and lasting impact.

Enjoyed participating in the Visio Mentis photo exhibition. I was impressed by the professionalism of the organization. The location itself, but also the digital environment and the promotional material were of high quality and allure.

The exhibition in March 2025 at Ex Stac in Catanzaro, which was the part of the Visio Mentis project, was an amazing event for me. The whole organizing team did a wonderful professional job in promoting photography as an art and photographers as the personalities. Seeing my own photos exhibited in the beautiful setting and having the opportunity to share my thoughts with other colleagues photographers and the audience was an unforgettable experience for me that I still enjoy for a long time after the exhibition is over. I am proud to have been a part of this project and at the same time it is an inspiration for me to continue searching for my own vizio mentis. Thank you very much for your support.
