Sharon Winget

Washington DC – USA

Sharon Winget is a street and documentary photographer based between Washington, DC (USA) and Mexico. Her work explores the quiet rituals of everyday life and the emotional textures found within intimate and communal spaces. She was introduced to photography by her father, whose appreciation for art, culture, and human connection shaped her earliest way of seeing the world. Over time, she developed a sensitivity not only toward people in their daily environments, but also toward the interaction between architecture, light, shadow, and landscape—elements that shape, shelter, and frame human presence.

Before dedicating herself to photography full time, she spent her professional life working closely with individuals and communities. This experience deepened her interest in resilience, tenderness, humor, and the small gestures that define lived experience. These themes continue to guide her photographic practice, particularly her attention to spontaneous moments of devotion, care, labor, and belonging.

Her recent work in Mexico focuses on the expressive layers of public and private ritual—on how gestures of offering, memory, and community are woven into the fabric of everyday life. In 2026, she was awarded an Individual Artist Fellowship by the Washington, DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities, and her photographs have been included in exhibitions and publications highlighting both emerging and established voices in contemporary photography. Whether photographing in sacred spaces, on the street, or within quiet interiors, Sharon Winget creates images that honor the dignity and complexity of ordinary experience.

The Project

"The Long Presence"

With “The Long Presence,” Sharon Winget presents a series of photographs taken in Mexico that explore the dignity of old age through an intimate and profoundly human documentary language. Far from any descriptive or sociological intent, the project stems from encounters with older people portrayed in markets, on doorsteps, during daily work, or within family relationships.

The images seek presence, not fragility. Each face bears witness to a life lived; each gesture recounts a continuity that spans time without losing its power. Sharon Winget constructs her portraits through a relationship of trust with the people she photographs, allowing each person to simply continue to be themselves before the lens.

Black and white eliminates any chromatic distraction and focuses attention on the expression, light, and extraordinary narrative richness of the faces. Wrinkles, hands, gazes, and postures become elements through which to interpret individual stories that take on a universal value.

The sequence alternates moments of contemplation, labor, tenderness, and irony, composing a narrative that transcends the simple theme of aging. The true focus of the project is the permanence of identity: the way each person continues to inhabit their space in the world, regardless of age.

With this series, Sharon Winget invites the viewer to slow down their gaze and recognize the extraordinary depth contained within the ordinary. It is a work that speaks of memory, resilience, and humanity, reminding us that a person’s presence does not diminish with time, but often acquires an even more intense force.

The Project

“Faith and Devotion in the Public Life of Mexico”

Sharon Winget presents a profound and evocative visual investigation that unfolds through the streets, shrines, and courtyards of Mexico, where small gestures of devotion emerge in quiet yet powerful ways. In these liminal spaces—where the sacred meets the ordinary—light and shadow trace the emotional rhythms of daily ritual.

The photographs in this series explore moments of reverence, intimacy, and communal presence that arise spontaneously in public life, without proclamation or spectacle. The thread connecting the images is a search for how people inhabit places shaped by long histories of faith, memory, and shared imaginaries.

Although the moments captured are entirely candid, each photograph is composed with meticulous attention to the interaction between architectural form, human expression, and light. Through the use of deep blacks, luminous highlights, and a restrained yet highly emotional tonal palette, the series seeks to convey not only the visual aesthetics of these moments, but their vibrant essence—fragile yet resolute, intimate and at the same time communal.

Participating in the Visio Mentis exhibition was a truly special experience for me. When I received the invitation, I felt both honored and grateful. Photography has been an important part of my life for many years, and having the opportunity to exhibit my work alongside talented photographers from around the world was something I deeply appreciated. My series, The Human Heart of the City, is about people, everyday moments, and the invisible connections that make a city feel alive. Seeing these images become part of an international exhibition and the official catalogue was incredibly rewarding. What I enjoyed most about Visio Mentis was the feeling of being part of a community of artists who share a passion for visual storytelling. Despite coming from different countries and cultures, we all speak the same language through photography. I would like to sincerely thank the organizers for their trust, professionalism, and dedication. And I must add one more thing: as someone who loves Italy, this experience was even more meaningful and memorable for me. Thank you for making me part of this wonderful project.

While uploading photos online, I saw an announcement from Pixel magazine inviting photographers to participate in a photography exhibition. I followed the advice of a photographer friend, to dare to exhibit, I sent the required number of photos and miraculously they were approved. When I saw them posted in the exhibition area, my surprise was great because I did not believe that my works could be exhibited. The other photographers who had participated had remarkable works that I admired. The result of my participation was that I became much more strict in the criticism of my works and much more selective in the selection of my photographs.

Vďaka tomu bolo milé vidieť, koľko ľudí má záujem          o  fotografiu ako takú a koľko fotografií a selfie s našimi fotografiami vzniká.

Z pełnym przekonaniem polecam organizatora i z chęcią wezmę udział w kolejnych projektach.
